Beach season and goose season overlap more than most towns would like. Public and community beaches across New Jersey, New York, and Connecticut combine open sand, adjacent grass, and calm water, all of which draw resident geese looking for a place to loaf and graze. Beyond the mess on the sand, goose droppings raise real water quality concerns, since they can contribute to bacteria levels that affect swimming advisories.

Birds & Geese Beware, Inc. has managed geese at beaches and waterfront recreation areas since 1991, using humane methods that keep sand and swimming areas clear for the public.

We start by walking the beach, the adjacent lawn or dune area, and the shoreline to see where geese are grazing, loafing, and nesting. Our trained Border Collies clear an active flock from the sand and grass through the Initial Clearing Program, while habitat modification, including a buffer of taller grass between the lawn and the beach, reduces the everyday draw. Beaches with a recurring problem move to the Maintenance Program, with scheduled visits that keep returning geese unsettled through quiet early morning hours, and the On-Call Program handles unpredictable pressure outside that schedule. All work is scheduled around beach hours and any lifeguard or staff schedules the property maintains.
